It’s the dreaded trap. You think you just need a few more followers on Instagram and life will be made, right?
So you do a few follow for follow threads. And everything is great for a while. Then comes the engagement drop.
You got a whole bunch of new followers but none of them care about your products (or anything you have to say for that matter) and so you stop showing up in their feeds. And pretty soon your engagement is so low you stop appearing in the feeds of the people who really wanted to follow you too!
So let’s talk about how to get out of that cycle if you’ve done it before (and it’s ok…most of us have). Here are three easy and effective steps.
1. Clean up your followers list.
Don’t go in and delete everyone all at once. But if you have accounts following you that aren’t your target market, get rid of them. Most commonly, you’ll want to get rid of other makers that are following you but not engaging with your content.
2. Clean up who you’re following.
If your feed is full of makers then that’s what Instagram thinks you want to interact and engage with. Instead follow accounts and influencers in your target market.
I sell home decor and my target market is moms. So I follow mom influencers and home decor accounts. Sit down and get really clear about who you want to sell to. Then follow them!
3. Engage. Engage. Engage.
With the right people. With your target market. With influencers that your target market follows. Find your people and genuinely engage, comment, and like their content.
It all boils down to knowing and finding your people. So if you’ve tanked your account or are having trouble gaining traction on Instagram, then pick one of these strategies to implement!
