How to Use Tags on Etsy

If you’re an Etsy seller, you know how important it is to use the right tags to stand out from the competition and make sure your items are seen by potential customers. With this guide, you’ll learn what tags are, why they are important, and how to use them effectively on Etsy to make more sales.

What are Tags on Etsy?

Etsy tags are keywords that describe your product and appear in the backend of your shop. They aren’t shown to buyers, but help Etsy decide what your product is and what searches it should show up in for potential customers. You can use up to 13 tags in each listing on Etsy.

How to Use Tags on Etsy to Rank Your Products Higher.

Ranking in searches on Etsy is one of the easiest ways to make consistent revenue on this platform. When it comes to ranking higher, keyword research and optimization are key. Research which terms potential customers use to find items in your niche or category. You can use Etsy itself or third party keyword research tools. Just remember to keep your tags focused on the specific items you’re listing, so that they accurately describe the product being sold. This helps improve your conversion rate which can move you up even higher in search results on Etsy.

What are the Best Keywords to Use for Etsy Tags?

The best keywords to use for Etsy tags are long tail keyword phrases that accurately describe the item you’re selling. These are going to be different for every product niche. Look for keywords that your buyers are actually typing into the search bar, that describe your product, and that aren’t too competitive or saturated. Include details like size, color, and style when appropriate. Also consider who uses your product and where they use it or who could someone gift your item to.

Things to Avoid When Creating Your Tags.

When creating your tags, avoid overly generic descriptors or spam words like “free”, “cheap” or “discount”. Don’t use single word phrases because buyers do not typically search that way. And avoid using phrases that have hundreds of thousands of results for competition, because those are going to be very difficult to rank for.

Analyze Your Results and Make Improvements.

Once you begin to use your Etsy tags strategy, it’s time to measure the results. Keyword changes can take up to 60+ days to start working on Etsy, so I recommend check in after 30, 60, and 90 days to see if you’re getting more traffic and what search terms you’re being found for.
