What To Do Before Opening An Etsy Shop

Starting a new business can be exciting, but there are many things that you need to consider before you launch your store. We’ll walk through all the steps you need to take in order to ensure that your online store will succeed.

Choose one Product Line.

Your Etsy shop doesn’t have to sell one thing to one specific niche forever until the end of time. But Etsy works better when you get found in search by the buyers who are already shopping on the platform. To do that, you need to make sure that Etsy knows you’re important for the keywords that you’re using. One of the ways that you do that, is to having a full product line of listings around that niche.

Let’s compare two shops for an example. Jewelry Shop A has 30 listings. They have rings, necklaces, earrings, and wedding hair pieces in all different styles. There’s floral, minimalist, rustic, and modern jewelry.

Jewelry Shop B also has 30 listings. Every listing is a set of rustic earrings.

Which shop gets found in search more often? Shop B! Shop B has told Etsy that they’re important for rustic earrings. So that’s what they’re getting found for. Shop A has told Etsy they’re not really important for any of the search terms they’re using, so they aren’t getting found in search.

Your shop can have multiple product lines in multiple niches. You don’t have to sell only one thing, forever. But pick one product line to sell to one type of person to start. You will start getting sales on Etsy much faster that way.

Prepare one Product Listing.

Make a product, takes photos, and package it up so you know how much it costs to ship. That’s all you need to start your shop. One product. Don’t wait til you have a full shop to launch unless you have a huge audience to launch to. Your shop doesn’t need to be perfect before you open. It just needs to have one product.

Set a Goal.

What you need to do to start and grow on Etsy will look much different if you want to make $1,000 on Etsy in the last 12 months compared to if you want to make $100,000.

Both of those goals are possible! But you need to know exactly what you want to do with your business in your first full year before you figure out how you’re going to do it.

Create a Business Plan.

Once you have that goal, you get to plan for it. No matter what your goal is, you need to learn how to get found in Etsy search before you list any more products. Learn more about that by signing up for my free 5 part framework. You’ll get a bonus SEO training in your first email!
