Etsy shop success: What to do when someone favorites your item on Etsy

Getting favorites on Etsy can be fun, right? But eventually, those notifications turn into frustration and asking yourself “Why aren’t they buying?!” So what can you do when someone favorites your listing on Etsy to turn it into a sale? Learn more about what to do and what not to do when your listing gets some attention.

Why do people favorite but not buy on Etsy?

First, let’s talk about why people favorite items on Etsy without purchasing. I want you to think about what happens when you shop online. I bet you have a cart full of stuff on Amazon or Target right now, right?

Buyers on Etsy do the same thing. They can favorite some potential purchases to come back to later for one reason or another. Maybe they’re planning for an event that’s not occurring for a few months or trying to decide between multiple listings that they want to keep track of.

Whatever the reason is, there are a few things you can do after a potential buyer favorites one of your listings.

Dive into your stats

The first thing you want to do is head to your Etsy stats page. You want to look at two main things. The first is what keywords that you are getting found for with your listings.

To find this, go to your dashboard, click on Stats, then scroll down and click on Etsy Search. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see the search terms that you are currently getting found for.

You can also go to your listings page, click on the cogwheel at the bottom of the listing, and then click view stats to see stats solely for that listing.

Knowing what keywords you are being found for will help you get more results because you can lean into what’s working to get traffic faster. Etsy is unique as a platform in that quantity matters. So if you increase the number of listings targeting the keywords that are already working for you, you are likely to move up in search results for those keywords.

The next thing you want to look at in your stats is your conversion rate. To find this for a specific listing, you can view the status for an individual listing as outlined a few paragraphs above. Then take the number of sales divided by the number of visits and multiply that number by 100 to find that listing’s conversion rate.

A normal conversion rate is between 1 to 3%. If your conversion rate is normal, or above normal, you’ll want to focus on getting more traffic instead of turning favorites in the sales. Use automated Offers

One of the easiest things Etsy sellers can do after someone favorites a listing is to use Etsy’s automated offers to reach potential buyers.

To use this feature, start in your Etsy dashboard, click Marketing, then Sales and Discounts. You’ll have the ability to turn on coupons for Favorited Items as shown here.

It’s important to remember, however, that these are often very slow. Not every buyer who favorites, one of your listings will receive this coupon because buyers need to opt into this type of marketing. You’re also competing against other sellers using these coupons as Etsy doesn’t want to spam buyers who favorite a lot of listings with a ton of offers.

That means that these offers work best when you’re already getting a lot of Etsy favorites. The more people who visit your shop, the more opportunities you have to get these coupons sent out. So don’t be discouraged if Etsy isn’t sending them out quickly.

Run a sale

Running a sale on a listing that has been favorited a lot can be another way to get some additional visibility and conversions. Etsy will often email or send notifications to buyers when a new sale occurs a product they have favorited.

If automated offers aren’t working because they aren’t getting sent out enough for you, try running a sale on even just one listing to see if I can get you more traction.

What not to do

There is one thing that you want to avoid doing when someone favorites, one of your listings on Etsy. Don’t break Etsy terms of service by spamming potential buyers through the messaging system.

Don’t risk your entire account by spamming Etsy users through unsolicited sales messages on the platform.

Other ways to get more traffic on Etsy

If you have a normal conversion rate, you want to continue to focus on more traffic for your Etsy business. There are a lot of ways that you can do that so let’s talk about some of the best.

Promoted listings

Marketing

There are dozens of ways that you can promote your Etsy shop. I recommend picking one social media platform that you enjoy and starting an email list.

Keep her marketing strategy simple so you can remain consistent with it. This will allow you to get to know your buyers and help them develop trust in you and your products.

Marketing consistently can also serve to increase your conversion rate because you’re sending warm traffic that already knows they’re interested in what you make. That can help increase your rankings in Etsy organic searches as well.

Listing new products

Listing new products on Etsy helps increase traffic by filling your product lines. It can also ensure that you’re creating new products to stay on top of trends in your niche.

It can be exciting when someone favorites, one of your listings on Etsy, especially if you are not currently getting consistent sales. Your options are limited for what you can do after this happens, though. Your best strategy is to treat Etsy favorites as a sign that your listings are getting more visible.
